Beginning on Friday, June 21, crews will kick off a project to replace the structural steel members and concrete deck of Lake Avenue Bridge over the Merritt Parkway in Greenwich, the Connecticut Department of Transportation announced. The decorative panels and ornamental railing will be preserved by cleaning and painting them off-site and returned to their original locations on the new structure.
The DOT said that a two-tube rail system will replace the existing metal beam rail. The project is expected to cost approximately $4,593,699.65 and is scheduled to be completed by Nov. 30.
During the project, traffic on Lake Avenue will be diverted to Lower Cross Road, North Street, and Grahampton Lane to allow access to each side of the bridge. Detour signage will be posted during the scope of the project.
According to the DOT, motorists can expect lane closures on the Merritt Parkway during the construction of the bridge. Construction in that area is permitted from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. southbound and from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. northbound during weekdays. Work is allowable between 7 p.m. and 9 a.m. on weekends.
“Motorists should be aware that modifications or extensions to this schedule may become necessary due to weather delays or other unforeseen conditions,” the DOT noted. “Motorists are advised to maintain a safe speed when driving in this vicinity and be guided by Construction signs and lane devices for lane closures.”
